    Description

very large rare Mason Decoy Co.white winged surf scooter duck ca. 1900
A very large ( over size)  rare , what I believe to be a special order solid body premier grade white wigned surf scooter by Mason Decoy Co. Detroit Michigan ( 1896-1924)  from the late 1890's - early 1900's. There are only a few examples of Mason surf scooters, mostly standard grade, and only one or two Premier grade one known to exist. There bills all have a lump at the top of the bill like a scooter does. This one has the classic Premier grade bill carving but is larger than a brant. On page 116 of the book "Mason Decoys" by Alan Haid and Russ Goldberger, there is a special order over size solid premier blackduck made for the Back Bays of Virginia - this looks to be similar but as a scooter, there is a couple coats of black  paint over white primer, no brown paint, hence , it has always been a  scooter  . Measures 20 & 1/2 inches from the tip of the bill to the tail, 17 & 1/2 inches from the chest to the tail, the body is 7 & 1/2 inches wide and 5 inches tall.A couple old in use repaints, a copper staple in the front and back for an anchor ties, painted eyes, a dowel peg down thru the top of the head, a little filler at the front anchor tie, a 2 by 3 inch piece of wood inserted on the right side near the front of the body which appears to have been there when it was made (see photos). Guaranteed to be as described/pictured.
NOTE; most of the shine on the decoys is from the camera lights
